5 Amazing and Unique Locations to Fly your Drone

Updated: Jul 16

Maybe you’ve just got a drone and don’t know where to test it out, or maybe you’ve had a drone for years and are seeking out new and interesting places to get some unique shots. You’re in the right place!

A drone is a great addition to camera gear or even just the perfect addition to your luggage if you frequently travel to amazing places. Drones are rapidly becoming better as technology develops, they are small and lightweight and offer a completely different perspective on a place. I tend to find that drone shots are most effective when either you want to show the vastness of the landscape, or when showing the surroundings from above can offer something completely different.

There are many locations all over the world that offer perfect opportunities to get great drone shots but below I have chosen my favourite places where I have experienced flying my drone whilst hoping to extend this list with more travels.

1 Meteora and Tzoumerka National Park, Greece

Meteora is a truly magical place. These unique rock formations can be found on mainland Greece, nestled in a mountainous landscape. On top of these tall, steep rocks are precipitously built monasteries. There are a few things to bear in mind when flying your drone in the area. Do not fly from or even near the monasteries. I found a great viewpoint to launch my drone from and only kept it up for a few minutes before the place started getting busy. On our drive from Paleros (on the West Coast of Greece) to Meteora we drove through Tzoumerka National Park, arguably the most beautiful drive I’ve ever done. We pulled up on the roadside to admire the views and of course fly my drone! Aerial shots of this area show the winding roads through the green mountains.

2 Lands End, Cornwall, England

A famous location visited by thousands every year, the steep cliffs of Land’s End offer an epic landscape and a perfect place to fly your drone. The vastness of Land’s End enables you to fly your drone without too much hassle. Most people tend to park up and stick around the cafe area so by taking the beautiful coastal path it’s not long before you can leave the crowds behind and find somewhere quiet and subtle to launch your drone. The beauty of this location is that there’s miles of coastline that would make amazing shots so wherever you end up launching from in this area it’s hard to get a bad shot.

3 Uvita, Costa Rica

Another coastal beauty, arguably best captured from above. Uvita is famous for its unique beach which is shaped like a whale tale during low tide. As I’m sure you can imagine, this is a spectacle which is more visible from above. Having said that, in order to really show this whale tail shape you need to fly the drone very high. My favourite drone shows of Uvita simply show the beach with the lush and leafy palm trees, narrow strip of sand and epic rolling waves. You can create some great layers in your shot with this location.

4 Port Louis, Guadeloupe, French Caribbean

Port Louis is everything you could want from a Caribbean beach with white sand, tall palm trees and crystal clear water. Drone shots of Port Louis really show the colour and clarity of the water and with the narrow strip of beach, much like with Uvita you can get a shot showing the layers of trees, sand and sea. A relatively unphotographed and unadvertised location.

5 Scotts Head Peninsula, Dominica

One of the world's most unvisited countries but one of my favourites. The small Caribbean country of Dominica has so much to offer with its incredible natural beauty. Scotts Head is a village in the very south of the island and if you take a short hike up the peninsula, on a clear day you will be able to see the French owned island of Martinique. By flying your drone from the headland you can get great shots of the mainland and the narrow piece of land which links it to the peninsula. I flew my drone there during sunset and we had the whole peninsula to ourselves. I can’t imagine it ever gets too busy up there either! It’s a real hidden gem.
